Presently there are three major importers of avocados in China: Mexico, Chile and Peru. Although Mexico is a number one avocado producing country globally, it was Chile that has become the major avocado supplier for the Chinese market in the last two consecutive years. Additionally, in February 2018 China put on the list of its avocado importers New Zealand. It is also said that currently the country is negotiating the import of “butter fruits” from the U.S., Israel, Columbia, Myanmar, and the Philippines. The growing demand from consumers has inspired China to grow its own avocados: Chinese avocados are cultivated in the regions of Hainan, Yunnan, Guangxi, Guandong, Guizhou, Fujian, Zhejiang (Wenzhou) and Sichuan (Panzhihua city). So, although China probably has a long way to go to become the major avocado consumption market, it is probably fair to consider it as a country with a huge potential.
